The moving parts of a paid social account

A managed paid social account has a handful of pieces, each of which needs attention over time:

  • Campaign objective, such as leads or website conversions, which tells the platform what to optimize for.
  • Audiences: saved targeting, website visitors, customer lists and lookalikes on Meta; job and company targeting on LinkedIn.
  • Creative: single images, short videos, carousels and, on LinkedIn, document ads.
  • Copy: the primary text, headline and call to action.
  • Destination: a native lead form or a landing page on your site.
  • Tracking: the Meta pixel and Conversions API, or the LinkedIn Insight Tag.
  • Budget and frequency, which together decide how often the same people see an ad.

Audiences, built and maintained

Audience work is a large share of paid social management, and it differs by platform.

On LinkedIn, targeting draws on profile data: job titles or functions, seniority, company size, industry, and lists of named companies you upload. The risk is making an audience so narrow the campaign barely delivers.

On Meta, the useful audiences are often your own: people who visited your site, people who engaged with your ads or page, and customer lists you upload, which Meta hashes before matching. Lookalikes built from those lists find similar people. Broad targeting, letting the algorithm find responders, is also common now.

Audiences need upkeep. Customer lists go stale, website audiences depend on the pixel firing, and exclusions keep existing customers from seeing prospecting ads.

Tell the provider about regulated offers

Some offers carry extra rules on paid social. If your ads touch housing, employment, credit or other financial products, Meta requires a special ad category, which restricts targeting by age, gender and ZIP code and changes how lookalikes work. Ads about social issues, elections or politics have their own authorization process.

Mention it in your quote request if any of this might apply: staffing and recruiting, lending or financing, property management, insurance and similar fields. The provider can then plan audiences and copy within the rules from the start.

Whether an offer falls in a category, and what your ads may say, is your decision to make with your own counsel. The provider sets up the campaign to match.

Questions about paid social campaigns

How often does ad creative need changing?

There is no fixed schedule. Creative needs refreshing when the same people have seen it often and stop responding, which shows up as a falling click rate and rising cost per lead. Small B2B audiences, especially on LinkedIn, tend to wear creative out sooner than broad ones.

What does frequency mean in paid social?

Frequency is the average number of times each person in your audience has seen an ad over a period. Some repetition helps people remember you. Too much, with the same creative, tends to bring hides, negative comments and fewer clicks. A provider watches it alongside budget and audience size.

Can I upload my customer list for targeting?

Both Meta and LinkedIn accept customer lists and hash the data before matching. You need the right to use that data for advertising under your own privacy policy and any consent you collected. Lists also help exclude existing customers from prospecting ads, so they see fewer offers they do not need.
